With the installation of a tankless water heater in your home, members of your household can enjoy the convenience of having hot water whenever it is needed. You will not spend on energy to keep the water at high temperatures in the tank and with the compact size of the tankless water heater, it can fit into any space and portray the beauty of your bathroom.
However, if you don’t apply preventive and maintenance measures to ensure the unit works efficiently, it could develop problems which will adversely affect its functionality. But the good news is that with the proper installation of the tankless water heater and a maintenance routine, the unit could last for up to 25 years.
So how will you maintain the tankless water heater to ensure it functions efficiently and lasts as long as possible?
In case you’re technically savvy, follow the DIY procedure and tips in this article to maintain your tankless water heater, but if you’re not comfortable with screws and electrical components, then call professionals at Just Water Heaters for water heater repair and maintenance.
Follow the step-by-step maintenance/flushing procedure of the tankless water heater.
Read the manufacturing manual or cleaning instructions of the unit. If it's not available, cut main gas supply or turn off the power source (if it’s an electric unit) but make sure that the bathroom is illuminated.
Unscrew the lid from the water heater and close all the pot valve caps attached to the unit. The valves are color labeled –blue, red, brown or black. They are responsible for the movement of water to and from the water heater. For safety, you need to ensure that the hot water valves are tightly shut off to avoid splashes of hot water.
Step three: Attach hosing lines
Your water heater should come with a hosing line; in case it's not available, then get it from the department stores.
Attach the hosing lines to the three valves and open the purge port valves.
Step four: Time to add vinegar
You need to add 2.5 gallons or 9.46 liters of undiluted white vinegar and do not use chemical solutions which could have negative effects on the unit and your skin.
Then flush the unit for 30 – 45 minutes and close the purge valves when the flushing is complete.
Step five: Disconnect the hosing lines
Carefully disconnect the hosing lines from each water valve and use the port caps to seal the purge valves. You should ensure that all the valves are tightened to avoid leakages.
Finally: check all the fixtures and restart the heater
You need to refer to the manufacturer’s manual for the right method to restart the water heater. However, if it's not available, make sure that the hot and cold water valves are position parallel to the main valve and ensure that there are no air bubbles in the pipe.
You are good to go! Restart the water heater, and everything will be working correctly.
